The continuity between the indoor and outdoor spaces integrates the activities of the gym, the porch and the playground.

Glorias housing

Urban integration and social will.
The Plaza de las Glorias catalanas follows its path to become, finally, the centre of the new Barcelona that Cerdá dreamed of. And in this process, the new residential facilities –of a strongly social nature- are a significant step to define the character of a new urban centre with a clear civic awareness that is added to the ongoing operations for the pacification of the transit and the creation of a new large park.

The new buildings will therefore have to be modest and meaningful at the same time, integrated into the fabric of the Eixample –of which they constitute façade and auction- but representative of the values to be granted to the new urban centre. They must emanate from a wide diversity of residents who, far from highlighting differences, integrate their multiplicity and give them equal treatment, with a powerful ecological concept that creates opportunities for coexistence and puts the accent on everything they can share.

Therefore, a singular complex made of different parts is proposed, each with its own identity, gathered under the same roof, which allows establishing varying degrees of relationship between users and facilitates common life. A set without significant differences between the part that has to be developed by private developers and the public part and that, moreover, gives to the last one the pre-eminent place. A set that, in the same way that many of the blocks of the Eixample have been developed, will maintain its overall coherence despite being carried out by different hands and phases.

Ceiling and roof. Image and soul.
This ceiling that shelters the collective life becomes the image that helps to identify the new facility. And this collective life is precisely what defines it.

The Eixample blocks tend to be resounding, with façade alignments that establish a clear difference between what is the public domain -the street- and what is the private sphere -the dwellings-, with ground floor commercial levels where both relate. On the other hand, both the recent market of the Encants and the project of the new Glorias Park make of the roof the reference from which the spaces of activity are articulated; a mirror ceiling, in the first case, and a green roof, in the second.

The project is nourished by all these elements and integrates them into a complex that acquires the standard height of the Eixample blocks. At the level at which the roofs of buildings are usually located, the real soul of the project is placed: a collective space where to develop a shared life that recovers the spirit that fed precisely the rooftops of the city. A space where people can meet each other, where you can carry out joint activities, where children can play, where you can have small orchards ... A space, also, with extraordinary views both towards the immediate environment and towards points away; a view that few social housing inserted in the urban fabric can offer their residents.

Above this rooftop there is the roof of the complex, which not only complements the residential program to be developed but also gives continuity to the "canopy" of the future park and constitutes a source of electricity generation to meet common energy needs.

Spaces of coexistence and spaces of transition.
If the roof is the semi-private space that promotes exchanges between residents in the building, the floor closest to the street is the semi-public space intended to facilitate the relationship between these and the rest of the citizens. Breaking the rigid division between public and private of the Eixample facades, this level opens towards the intersection between Gran Vía and Ribes street and facilitates the incorporation of civic life.

By paying attention to the topographic conditions of the surroundings, a fully accessible space is created that can be crossed in different directions, at least during daytime, facilitating the permeability between the city, the park and the Encants; a space from which you can access the stairs of the dwellings, with protected elements to park the bicycles of the residents and with easy access to the shops.

Private spaces, flexible spaces.
The high density of the new residential complex has to be compatible with the guarantee of good climatic conditions for all its parts and therefore the size of the adopted bay optimizes the conditions of the dwellings and endows the with generous spaces in between.

On the other hand, the dividing module that organizes the housing and the disposition of the service nuclei allow to guarantee both their correct lighting and sun conditions and the maximum flexibility in their distribution, so that there are no prefixed hierarchies between the various pieces and that both the varied needs and interests of their users and their changing conditions over time can be accommodated.

Espacios privados, espacios flexibles.

plaça folch i torres

(versión en castellano más abajo)

Ciutat Vella and Eixample are two districts of Barcelona that are significantly different, not only in terms of their urban morphology but also because of their social composition, their commercial activity or the role they play in the city as a whole. Within Ciutat Vella, Raval is, moreover, the neighborhood with the highest percentage of population at risk of exclusion and the highest number of problems of coexistence among groups. It is, therefore, where public space has a more significant role in the articulation of coexistence.

The Folch i Torres square is located on the edge of the Raval, just next to the Eixample, of which it is separated by the Ronda de Sant Pau, halfway between two worlds that are substantially different.

Located in a lot where the women's prison of Barcelona was located until 1936, it was the object of a redevelopment at the end of the 1980s. This led to the creation of a large sandy area, located at the level of the Reina Amàlia street, and a paved terrace with a dense  robinia plantation, at the level of the Ronda de Sant Pau, about 3 m above the previous one. The difference between the two levels was saved by a wall that included an ornamental fountain.

This organization of the space, quite logical at first glance, had been transformed over the years into a accumulation of elements where uses were being located based on opportunity rather than on organizational coherence, so that the basketball court ended literally next to the children playground, or the petanque court right at the opposite end of the center for elderly people.

It had also become a segregated space, which neighbors perceived as Raval’s last frontier. Even if the Eixample is just across the street, the feeling was that it was extremely far away, "behind" the wall with the fountain and the wooded mass. To reach it, it was necessary to take the stairs of Lleialtat Street or a semi-hidden ramp on one of the sides. The feeling of being next to another world with which there was little opportunity for dialogue was increasingly intense.
Objectives
The project reverses the situation with two fundamental project decisions: the creation of a continuous topography that saves the gap between Reina Amàlia Street and Sant Pau Street with a slope of around 3%, and the articulation of a compositional mechanism of bands that allows organizing the multiplicity of uses with coherence.

This came out through a participatory process in which residents in the area voiced out their points of view and commented of the proposals that were being made. Local authorities were particularly keen on ensuring that the full process was transparent, open to all involved parties and within their planned estimate.

The objective was to transform the square into an element of contact between both urban areas and an opportunity to articulate the various confluences, in order to stop it being a cul-de-sac and become the gateway to Raval.

Description
Divided into two vaguely triangular halves, it concentrates the most active areas – children playgrounds, petanque, circulations ... - near the residential facades of Lleialtat and Reina Amàlia streets, and creates a quieter area in front of the facade of the Milà i Fontanals secondary school. The new basketball court that can be also used for the festive activities of the neighborhood is located near Ronda Sant Pau.

A great diagonal stepway -highlighted by lamps of a bigger size than in the rest of the square- connects the corner of Lleialtat and Reina Amàlia with Ronda de Sant Pau, becoming the main axis that articulates the new relationship between the Raval and the Eixample.

Vegetation plays a fundamental role in the new image of the space through the combination of trees and plants that bloom at different times of the year. The square thus becomes a changing scenario throughout the seasons, a calendar of the neighborhood that consolidates day by day its symbolic aspect as a city space.
Conclusions
The result is a square that opens to the outside and becomes a gateway to Raval; a space that takes care of the balance between the various users; where everyone can walk or sit quietly to chat or read; where multitudinous events can be organized; where the smallest ones may enjoy inclusive playgrounds, the youngsters a basketball court and the eldest petanque courts; a space of coexistence where, in short, the various groups of residents can find their place and interrelate.

Reduce vehicle parking spaces and widen sidewalks, plant trees on both sides of the street, place banks and bins, change the lighting to improve energy efficiency ... Improve, ultimately, the spatial quality of this avenue in the municipality of Santa Coloma de Gramenet, in the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona, in order to make it more friendly for residents and users. These have been, in short, the mechanisms and objectives behind the work we have carried out.

Masterplan Menen

(versión en castellano más abajo)

Cities are organisms whose complexity can only be approached from a multitude of complementary disciplines and through systematic actions over time. The rhythms of governance impose, however, the need for mechanisms that set strategic bounded objectives, establish feasible schedules and allow gradual progress to visualize the action of government.

That's where urban design is doomed to choose between the various intervention options that exist, identifying those urban systems whose impact potential is bigger, choosing the target areas among those with added transforming capacity and defining the actions that permit, within a reasonable time frame, generating changes that positively impact the generation of further transformations.

The change thus generated will always be necessarily biased, but it will allow to put in place the essential mechanisms to establish transformative dynamics that will lead to the necessary critical mass that ensures that the process reaches cruising speed.

Menem has before it an opportunity that can become an engine of change: the widening of the river as it passes through the town to allow the movement of bigger barges. This intervention, even if it will certainly be going to affect a significant number of homes and change the relationship between the city and the river, can also be the trigger that allows the city to address other essential changes.

The commercial axis linking the main square with the French town of Halluin is one of its most important economic engines. The disruption the river entails -and that can be aggravated once widened- must become an opportunity to articulate two systems that converge there: the natural area of the river and road communication space of the new bridge to be built. Being both related to the notion of public space, they will allow the articulation of nature, mobility and commerce in a new central hub of the city.

If we add the precious heritage of Menen -which has on its Vauban fortifications its most remarkable exponent- to these three axes, we will have defined the four levers through which to articulate the transformation.

The choice of sites on which to intervene is made, from there on, identifying those places that can be consistently articulated with the central intervention around the river and entail the use of similar resources. Among them, the former branch of the river today know as Oude Leielaan plays a structuring role that allows bringing into contact some existing facilities and several urban fragments.

The work done is the result of a process that has involved extensive technical, academic, political and civic participation. It is not intended to solve all the problems Menen must deal with, but draws a roadmap that we hope will allow to get progressively closer and without delay to her aspirations.

A castle which is not a castle.
The Torre del Baró was built around 1904. It is located in one of the crest lines of the Collserola hills and, despite its residential origin, seems to be a fortification of historicist style. It is visible from much of the northeastern sector of Barcelona and has views over the city and the interior valleys of the metropolitan area.

A ruin that doesn't want to be a ruin.
The construction was never completed and it has been a ruin since its inception. It was used for military purposes during the civil war and as a meeting point for civic movements in the 1970s. Repeatedly neglected, it got into an unstoppable process of degradation.

A late 1980s consolidation addressed its structural problems while a viewpoint above Barcelona was built at their feet. Various partial works were later conducted, but they remained inexplicably unfinished and the building continued degrading.

Its new destination as an information point on the Collserola Park and the works carried out with this purpose, aim to stop this process, allowing public use and making it become a reference element to the surrounding neighborhoods.

A kiosk on the mountain.
The information point is located on the ground floor, an open space coated half way with ceramic tiles and articulated around a granite counter. A great backlit photo-plane and black iron panels are the basis on which information is printed.

Lavatories and storage rooms are located downstairs. To facilitate access to the ground floor a new metal staircase meeting current regulatory requirements is constructed. These two plants are the only fully public levels and the only area with enclosures and protection.

The rest of the building is intended as a viewpoint and is accessed by a spiral staircase introduced in the 1980s. While safety of all the openings is improved, no fences are placed on the higher levels and they remain open.

The three skins of time.
The intervention is respectful to the past, both the original construction and the 1980s intervention, adding a new layer to the building that does not prevent from reading the previous.

The original building is characterized by its masonry walls and its openings with lintels and manual brickwork arches. The intervention of 1987 is made of concrete, mechanic brickwork and gray painted iron.

The new intervention works almost with a single material: black steel. It is used to configure the new safety elements (bars and handrails), the panels and exhibition elements, the new divisions and the new staircase.

The contemporary language of the intervention is thus compatible with the historicist character of the building not being thereby less recognizable.
